About Astyanax Journal
Astyanax is a blind peer-reviewed undergraduate journal on Classical Studies sponsored and launched by the Department of Classics at the University of Reading. It welcomes contributions to ancient Greek and Latin literature, philology, linguistics, and history as well as to cultural and material aspects of the ancient world (e.g., ancient religion, archaeology, art) from 12 th c. BCE to 5 th century CE. Discussions on reception of antiquity in any aspect of the modern world as well as on Global Classics and/or Egyptian, Anatolian, African, and/or ancient Mediterranean world are also welcome.
Astyanax aims to provide a platform for early academic research to be published under a peer-review process. It also endeavours to widen access to Classics and to enable students to develop and publish their own independent, innovative, and original pieces as well as to gain experience in the organisation and publication of research material in ways and forms that promote an inclusive research environment, distribute the latest developments in our discipline among a wider and more diverse audience, and provide students with crucial professional skills to boost their future employability.
The journal invites publications of articles by undergraduate students. It also announces a yearly essay competition for school students in Years 10-13 to promote and foster inclusivity and widened access to research as well as a yearly composition competition for undergraduate students to support and celebrate diverse and innovative engagement with ancient languages.
