Guidelines

All submissions are doubly peer-reviewed anonymously by postgraduate students, members of the editorial board, and members of the academic staff at the Department of Classics at the University of Reading who are chosen based on area of expertise.

Guidelines for Article Submissions:

  • Astyanax invites submissions of articles on any aspect of the ancient world from undergraduate students, at any stage of their study.
  • A submission consists of:
    • An abstract of 200 words in a separate file.
    • The registration form.
    • The article itself. The title of the file should be the title of the article.
  • The article word count can vary from 1,500 to 4,000 words. Word counts include footnotes but exclude bibliography.
  • Please use Arial font, 12-point, and line spacing of 1.5. Subsections (if included) are to be underlined, and the title of the article must be in bold. Please use footnotes rather than endnotes.
  • Ancient sources should be cited according to the Oxford referencing system, while modern sources should be cited according to the Harvard referencing system. Ancient sources should be cited in-text, and modern sources should appear in footnotes. Those footnotes should take the following form: Surname (year: page), e.g. Rutherford (2009: 17).
  • For abbreviations, please use those listed in the Oxford Classical Dictionary, which can be found here.
  • All quotations in the original language (e.g., Ancient Greek or Latin) should be translated to English. Please acknwledge the author(s) of any translations used even for those that are your own.
  • Authors will be notified of the decision of the editorial board within two months from the deadline of submission.
  • Generative AI should not be used at any stage of the production of any piece for this journal.
